Data Conversion

Data conversion pertains to file format conversion and the handling of various forms of media on which data are stored. File format issues typically arise when data need to be accessed by programming tools with differing data input requirements. Because data are stored and shipped in a wide range of media formats, retrieval and conversion issues arise particularly with data received from external sources or needing to be recovered from old media.

File conversion issues are more common and there are improving sets of tools for handling them. The intent will be to document techniques and tools for the most typical conversions and to provide consultation on the more difficult. Among the commonly required conversions are:

  • ASCII file to system file (or the reverse)
  • System file (package A) to system file (package B)
  • System file (platform A) to system file (platform B)
  • System file to portable file (or the reverse)
  • Archive or compressed format file to regular format file (or the reverse)

Media conversions are less common and require specialized equipment and knowledge. The extent to which such services are needed is not fully known. Researchers need to communicate their particular needs in this area. Among the issues anticipated are:

  • Retrievals from or conversions between various tape media
  • Preparation and/or duplication of CD and DVD media
  • Network distribution of data through automated devices such as CD or DVD jukeboxes
