How to Request ICPSR Data

Requests for new studies should be directed by e-mail to Bob Jackson. In your request, please indicate the following:

  • The ICPSR study number
  • The study title
  • Your name
  • Your phone number
  • Your Duke affiliation [NOTE: You must be affiliated to order]
  • Any other particulars or questions

Please limit your requests to studies you really plan to use. The time required to order and archive data can be considerable. If you are not sure whether you want to use a study, it is good practice to first obtain documentation and then make an informed decision. While the data for most ICPSR studies are not downloadable, documentation in machine-readable format is freely available. Most ICPSR codebooks are in digital formats. Data users are expected to absorb the cost of printing machine-readable documentation.

Printed codebooks for older studies are housed in the Social Science Data Center office area ~ Room 140A, Sociology/Psychology ~ and they may be checked out. Printed codebooks are loaned with the expectation of return. ICPSR maintains a documentation list that aids in determining documentation scope and format for each study.

If printed codebooks are available, personal copies may be ordered directly from ICPSR for the cost listed on the documentation list plus shipping. They typically arrive in 1 to 2 weeks.

When an order has been completed, you will be informed by e-mail and provided a data information sheet for each study ordered that details access information.
