SAS Statistical Software - Local Availability

SAS licensing for Duke is negotiated and managed by the Site License Office of OIT. Academic licensing agreements are done by platform. One agreement exists for Windows systems. Other agreements exist for UNIX platforms including Solaris SPARC and HP/Compaq Tru64.

OIT maintains SAS in all of its public Windows PC and Sun UNIX labs. Additionally SAS is available on the godzilla remote access UNIX compute servers. OIT makes SAS available to the rest of Duke for network and individual PC installation on a cost recovery basis. Any Duke affililate may purchase an annual SAS for Windows license from OIT for personal desktop or laptop use at an annual cost of $30.00.

Two versions of SAS are in prevalent use - SAS 6.12 and SAS 8.2. In general, use the newer version where possible. SAS system files in version 8 are stored in a uniform format across all platforms, which greatly faclitates cross-platform use.

UNIX SAS is used where large files and computationally demanding applications are entailed. Within Social Science units SAS is installed on the following UNIX servers:

  • Central Arts and Sciences resource - ricardo.aas.duke.edu - SAS 8.0 - interactive or batch mode. Accounts on this server are available to any faculty member or graduate student needing UNIX SAS and not otherwise having access within their unit.
  • Economics - harsanyi.econ.duke.edu and nash.econ.duke.edu - SAS 8.2 - interactive or batch mode. Harsanyi is the faster server.
  • Sociology - charisma.soc.duke.edu and angst.soc.duke.edu - SAS 6.12 or SAS 8.2 - interactive or batch mode. Charisma is the faster server.
